Free! Ebooks! Blimey!

Well, I’ve been running around the net like a headless chicken (not a pretty sight too, I can tell you) trying to round up all my links of legal e-books. It’s amazing how much content there is out there, and what’s more amazing is just how much is lifted verbatim from Project Gutenberg. So, without further ado, here’s some of my favourite sites for when I need to quench my thirst for prose and knowledge.

Play old-school game music on your PSP and iPod

Like many sad people out there, I quite like the odd bit of retro game music in my collection, but don’t like having a zillion and one different players for different formats. To make matters worse, I don’t generally listen to this kind of stuff at home, I’d rather listen to it on the go on my PSP, an iPod or some other MP3 Player. What I need to do is convert these files to a common format that I could play on a portable system… hmmm…

Using this method, you can convert your mods, spc’s and other retro game system music formats into MP3s optimized according to the original system’s sound capabilities. I’m going to use the same method for two different games from two different systems, but this should work for pretty much anything.

Avian Flu, what are you going to do about it?

Avian Flu is a global issue affecting everyone around the world. In an increasingly interconnected and interdependent global marketplace, East Asia, a source of massive economic growth over the past few years is about to become our own worst enemy.

But how will flu impact us? Is it really going to be as bad as the 1918 spanish flu epidemic? Some experts say not as bad, some say worse. The fact is that we just don’t know. The world has changed significantly since 1918, and perhaps it’s better to look at the spread of SARS which, whilst not as virulent as a human to human strain of H5N1, is the best example of a fatal human to human transferred disease we have.

Mini Cooper to Autonomous Robot Biped Mod

Colin Mayhew is an interesting chap. Some people choose to mod their PC cases. Others may choose to play with Transformers. Colin is ‘modding’ his Mini Cooper r50 into a giant 12ft autonomous robot. We like Colin.

Colin has this to say about his project and the Mini:

I first had the vision to build a robot while working as an engineer on the old Mini Coopers in the late 1960s. There were no real robots at the time of course, so it was purely science-fiction. But I always believed a robot would be the most natural complement to the automobile – a full biped, intelligent version having great strength, dexterity and a library of mechanical knowledge. I imagined a robot with the ability to repair vehicles, direct traffic and watch over high-accident crossroads to preempt accidents.

Streaming Video over VLC

VLC is one of those Open Source Projects that only gets about a tenth of its capability used by most people. What people often miss about VLC is its amazing streaming functions. Being the lazy fool that I am, I decided that it wasn’t enough to play my movies in one location in the house, I wanted them to be available everywhere, and I wanted to hit play and continue where I left off rather than start from scratch. Enter VLC.

If you’re one of those jammy beggars with a PocketPC, Sharp Zaurus or just want to be able to go to the toilet whilst your movies are playing and are too lazy to pause, read on. If you’re not, well, read on anyway…
