Every now and again, you come across something ideally suited for the Internet. The Best Ads on TV is just that. It’s a site containing some of the better TV ads doing the rounds.

Of course there’s plenty to choose from, making it an essential visit for anyone into Beer, Transforming Cars or home appliance wrestling.

OS Wars: Linux Vs Windows Vs OSX Vs Anyone that Cares

Ever wonder who’d win in a fight between OSX and <Insert OS Here>? No, me neither. Still, it hasn’t stopped countless idiots from making the somewhat bizarre assumption that Mac OSX is any secure (or even better) than any other OS out there.

You see, the argument generally seems to fall into several categories:

  • X is more secure than Y because X uses unrelated feature from Z
  • X is more secure than Z because X.. erm, never mind.
  • X is better than Z because the applications are more polished and I can get translucent icons in cobalt blue
  • X is better than Y because.. erm, never mind, but it’s more secure so I get the best of both worlds.

I’m reminded of a quote from the Simpsons, which Mad Mondo very kindly brought to my attention:

Homer: Not a bear in sight. The “Bear Patrol” must be working like a charm!
Lisa: That’s specious reasoning, Dad.
Homer: Thank you, dear.
Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Oh, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn’t work.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It’s just a stupid rock. But I don’t see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock.

Please leave your sensibilities and green-blooded vulcan logic at the door. Welcome to the OSX versus Windows debate, where whichever side you’re on, you’re sat next to Homer Simpson.

Serialised Graphic Novel for the PSP

It’s not particularly new but in case you haven’t heard of it, Dayender is a PSP optimized Graphic Novel Set in a post-tsunami-flooded manhattan a century from now. So far, the first two issues have been released, and it’s great stuff. I really like the use of GPL licensed narcotics – not sure why they’re there but it’s a fun concept nonetheless (ok, maybe I need to get out more.)

Anonymous Proxies – Keeping Anonymous under Firefox with SwitchProxy

I’ve spoken about Tor before on several occasions, I’ve also mentioned the excellent SwitchProxy Firefox extension. Well, Tor has its downsides, and sometimes it’s better to switch to regular anonymising proxies. One of the great people on the shroomery message boards has written a proxy-list scraping script that generates a flat list of proxies. I’ve hosted this script here for those of you who don’t have a working PHP setup. The best thing about this script is that you can set it up to import into switchproxy and even auto-update. Here’s how.
