Oh we likes it, we likes it!
The Jack-PC from Chip PC converts existing LAN jacks into full-function Windows CE-powered thin clients, apparently wihtout requiring additional cabling. It runs on an AMD Au1550 Alchemy processor with 128Mb of RAM and 64 MB of flash. Three versions are available, two supporting 1280×1024 and a third with DVI support up to 1600×1200. The best thing is that two of the models are powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE), meaning that you stick one of these over your existing Ethernet Jack and off you go!
I’d love to have some of these for an LTSP or even ICA setup in the kitchen – just plug it into a TFT and keyboard/mouse combo, and off we go.

It’s fairly easy to complain about bloat in the Windows world, and even Linux and Mac users can certainly no longer claim to have the most efficient OSes in the world. With projects like OpenOffice, as wonderful as they are, taking up vast amounts of CPU time, and others like FireFox (currently using about 128 meg of RAM as I write!) grabbing as much memory as they can. Maybe it’s the trade off between eye-candy and efficiency, but sometimes I hanker for a time when things were much simpler. So as I wandered through the InterWeb the other day, I stumbled across these hidden gems from the past. It just goes to show that you don’t need the latest ninja PC to run a reasonable GUI-based OS.

Yet more movement on the site front. The categorization was getting a little out of hand and needed tidying up, so that’s been done. You’ll also notice the handy Quick Navigation bar at the top of the post, and of course the forums. The way adverts have been handled has also changed, so now instead of getting adverts in-post, or plugs for products on Amazon, adverts should now stay in the same place, separate from the content. Depending on how this works out, this might change.
Anyways, enjoy the new features, and leave comments (or contact me) if you have any suggestions.

Yup, SnakeOil Labs now has a discussion forum. It’s powered by BBPress. If I get time, I’ll integrate it a bit more into the main site, but for now it’ll have to do as is.

Check out this fantastic music video for Jed’s other poem by Grandaddy. The video, produced by a fan was written in AppleSoft Basic on an Apple ][ (I kid you not)
